Behind Second Life is Zero Tech Waste, a UK technology recycling and refurbishment business that works directly with organisations retiring their IT equipment.

We don't just buy mystery laptops and put them back on sale. We're involved in the journey that gives quality technology another life: from sourcing and inspection to refurbishment, grading and delivery. We are real experts with real attention to the details that matter.

That's the Second Life difference.
→ Explore our refurbished tech

We're not just another refurbished tech shop.

Each year, businesses replace perfectly useful technology. Sometimes equipment has reached the end of its working life. Often, it's simply reached the end of a corporate upgrade cycle. Those are two very different things.

Through Zero Tech Waste, we work with businesses, offices, data centres and organisations across the public and private sectors to recover retired IT equipment. We believe the best thing to do with quality technology isn't always to recycle it. It's to use it again.

When equipment is suitable for refurbishment, our job is to give it that opportunity — and make it available to someone who can put it to good use.

That might be a student who needs a dependable laptop. A small business buying equipment for its team. Someone working from home. Or an IT professional who knows exactly which component they need. Different people. Different needs. One thing they have in common: they want great technology without paying more than they need to.

From their desk to yours. Here's how it works.

We think you should know what happens to a laptop before it reaches your hands. Because the difference between buying second-hand and buying confidently refurbished technology isn't just the price. It's the process.

01 — Sourcing

Sourced from businesses, not guesswork.

Our technology comes from commercial environments, including offices, business fleets and data centres. Through Zero Tech Waste, we have direct access to equipment being retired by organisations upgrading or replacing their IT. That gives us an opportunity to identify technology with plenty of useful life remaining.

02 — Data security

Previous data is dealt with securely.

Before data-bearing equipment is made available for resale, it goes through our data sanitisation process. Protecting the information of previous owners is fundamental to responsible IT reuse.

Our secure data destruction methods include erasure, degaussing or physical destruction, matched to the risk. All of these methods are GDPR & WEEE compliant. With erasure, we use NCSC-approved erasure software to overwrite the entire accessible memory space, so the original data can never be recovered, but the device itself can be used again. This is the option that supports refurbishment and reuse rather than scrapping, and it’s central to how we put circular economy principles into practice.

03 — Testing

Checked on the bench. Not just switched on.

A laptop that powers up isn't necessarily a laptop that's ready for another owner. Our refurbishment process involves assessing equipment, checking functionality, identifying faults and preparing suitable devices for reuse.

Our comprehensive testing procedures cover battery health, storage drive health, memory, display, keyboard, connectivity and ports, the overall cosmetic condition and functionality. The aim is simple: understand the condition of the equipment before putting it up for sale.

04 — Refurbishment

Cleaned, prepared and refurbished.

Suitable equipment is cleaned, prepared and refurbished as required. Some devices need very little attention. Others need additional work before they're ready to return to service. Not everything can, or should, be resold. Where reuse isn't appropriate, Zero Tech Waste follows its recycling and recovery processes. We think that a second life should be earned, not assumed.

05 — Honest grading

Honestly graded. Clearly described.

Not every refurbished laptop looks brand new. And that's absolutely fine, provided you know what you're getting.

We use condition grades to help you understand the appearance and condition of the equipment before you buy.

  • Excellent: Almost no signs of wear. Any marks on the body are tiny and invisible from about 20 cm, and the screen has no scratches.
  • Good: Light signs of wear. The body may have faint micro-scratches you won’t see from arm’s length, and the screen has no more than tiny scratches.
  • Fair: Visible signs of wear. The body may have a few scratches or small dents that don’t affect performance, and the screen may show light scratches when it’s on.
  • Outlet: Fully working, but with a specific, disclosed limitation: for example pressure marks or a faint line on the screen, worn or shiny keys, a loose hinge, a missing bezel strip or rubber foot, a reduced battery, or a faulty webcam. Each one is described in the listing, priced accordingly, and sold with our standard seller guarantee.

We think that every listing should make the actual specifications, grade and any relevant limitations clear, because a small scratch on a perfectly useful laptop shouldn't be a nasty surprise. Rather, it should be an opportunity to get a better deal.

Your confidence matters as much as our prices.

We know why buying refurbished equipment can make people hesitate.

Will it work properly? What happens if something goes wrong? Is the condition really as described? Will there be anyone to speak to after I've paid? Those are fair questions, and we believe they deserve proper answers.

A 12-month seller guarantee

Most of our products come with a 12-month seller guarantee, giving you reassurance beyond the day your order arrives. The two exceptions are power supplies and graphics cards.

Our guarantee covers failure caused by defects in materials or workmanship, for 12 months from the date of delivery. If a covered fault develops we will repair or replace the device, or refund you, in line with the Consumer Rights Act 2015. We cover the return postage for confirmed faults.

It does not cover batteries, which are a consumable part, or accidental damage, liquid damage, misuse or unauthorised repairs. To make a claim, message us through the marketplace you bought from, or use the contact form on our website, with your order number and a short description of the fault. We will reply within two working days with next steps.

You can return eligible purchases within 30 days of delivery under our returns policy.

To start a return, message us through the marketplace you bought from, or use the contact form on our website, quoting your order number. We will send a returns reference and instructions within two working days.

If you have changed your mind, you pay the return postage and we refund the full purchase price once the item is back with us in the condition it was sent, including accessories. If the item is faulty or not as described, we send a prepaid label and refund, repair or replace at no cost to you. Refunds are made to your original payment method within 5 working days of the item arriving back with us.

Better value. Less waste. More life.

Here's something worth thinking about. A perfectly capable computer doesn't suddenly stop being useful because a business decides to replace it.

And producing new technology requires materials, energy, manufacturing and transportation. Extending the useful life of existing equipment can reduce demand for new manufacturing and help prevent valuable materials from becoming waste prematurely.

That's why reuse matters.

At Zero Tech Waste, the priority is to recover value from retired technology wherever practical, with responsible recycling and recovery for equipment that cannot be reused.

At Second Life, that philosophy becomes something you can actually buy. A quality laptop for less. A useful component instead of an unnecessary replacement. Technology doing the job it was built to do — for longer.

You save money. Good technology stays useful. And valuable resources get another chance.

We think that's a smarter way to buy.

A proper business. With proper credentials.
